About Louisville, KY

The city was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and named after King Louis XVI of France. It is one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountain range.

During World War 2, the city was a factory production facility. The Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Company was a war plant located at Louisville's airfield. The plant was a wartime aircraft production facilitiy. Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Company produced the C-46 Commando cargo planes among other aircraft. The factory was later sold to International Harvester in 1946. After being sold to a new company, the company transitioned to producing tractors and focused on agricultural equipment.

The county of Louisville and Jefferson sits on a combined area of 397.68 square miles—380.46 square miles of land and 17.23 square miles of water. The city is situated along the border between Kentucky and Indiana. The city is influenced by Southern and Midwestern culture. It is also located in Kentucky's outer Bluegrass region. The city is built on very wide and flat land which is prone to flooding. Many canals and creeks were constructed to reroute the flow of water.

The "Happy Birthday" song was written by Patty and Mildred J. Hill—two Louisville sisters. The memorial park located in Louisville is the largest municipal urban forest within the United States. It covers over 6,000 acres of land.
